Wedding at Castell de Sant Marçal, near Barcelona
Jaclyn & Bryan, Castell de Sant Marçal

Barcelona has a secret most couples only discover once they start planning: the city is wonderful for a welcome dinner and portraits in the Gothic Quarter, but the weddings themselves happen outside it. Within an hour of the airport you have medieval castles, 17th-century country estates (the Catalan masía) and modernist villas on the Mediterranean. These are the six we photograph most, and what we have learned about each.

1. Castell de Sant Marçal — the castle 25 minutes from the city

A 12th-century castle in Cerdanyola del Vallès with towers, a stone courtyard and a pine forest behind it. Ceremonies happen in the courtyard or on the lawn under the walls; dinner in the vaulted halls or outside. The stone stairs and the woods give a completely different look from the gardens, so the day never feels like one location. Best light: ceremony at 18:00 in summer. Guests: 80–200. Distance: 25 minutes from central Barcelona.

2. La Baronia — the country estate we know by heart

If you have seen our portfolio you have seen La Baronia. A private estate in Sant Feliu de Codines with a garden ceremony under old trees, a long terrace for dinner and a party that goes on until the early hours. Wisteria in spring, stone walls, a pond and open countryside for golden-hour portraits — huge variety in a small area. Best light: the garden is in shade by 18:30 in June. Guests: 60–180. Distance: 50 minutes; exclusive use.

3. Xalet del Nin — a modernist villa in Sitges

A white modernist villa with palms and a garden that ends at the sea wall, the Mediterranean directly behind the ceremony. The venue for couples who want Barcelona light and the beach in the same day. Schedule couple portraits on the sand 30 minutes before sunset, when the promenade empties and the light turns pink over the church of Sant Bartomeu. Guests: 50–150. Distance: 40 minutes south.

4. Castell de Tamarit — a castle on the sea

A fortified medieval village on a headland near Tarragona, with its own beach, ramparts and a Romanesque church. The most cinematic sunset on the Catalan coast — the light comes in low across the water and hits the stone from the side. Ceremonies in the church or on the terrace over the sea; dinner in the courtyard. Guests: 80–250. Distance: 1 hour; plan a shuttle.

5. Casa del Mar — barefoot on the beach

A beach club in Sitges built for multi-day celebrations: a sangeet on Friday, the ceremony on Saturday, brunch on Sunday. We have photographed Indian and fusion weddings here across three days with 300 guests, and it never felt crowded. Best for: large, colourful, multi-day weddings. Distance: 40 minutes.

6. The Costa Brava — cliffs, gardens and fishing villages

The botanical gardens of Marimurtra in Blanes, the coves of Begur and Calella de Palafrugell, boutique hotels and private villas. Ideal for intimate weddings and day-after sessions — turquoise water, pines down to the rocks and nobody on the beach at 8 a.m. Distance: 1–2 hours north.

In short

  1. Want the city in your story? Sant Marçal or La Baronia — close enough for a Gothic Quarter session in the morning.
  2. Want the sea in the photographs? Xalet del Nin, Tamarit or Casa del Mar.
  3. Want a weekend, not a day? Casa del Mar (big) or a Costa Brava villa (small).
  4. 150+ guests? Tamarit, Sant Marçal or Casa del Mar handle the numbers best.
  5. Book 12–14 months ahead for a Saturday between May and October.

Frequently asked questions

Can we get married in Barcelona city itself?

Yes — hotel rooftops and a few palaces in the Gothic Quarter host weddings — but most couples marry outside the city for space, gardens and late-night music, and use Barcelona for the welcome dinner and portraits.

How do guests get to the venue?

Guests usually stay in Barcelona or Sitges and travel in shuttle coaches arranged by the planner, leaving after the ceremony time is fixed and returning in two waves after midnight.

Which venue has the best light for photographs?

For sunset, Castell de Tamarit and Xalet del Nin, both facing the sea. For soft shade through the afternoon, La Baronia and Sant Marçal.

Do these venues allow symbolic ceremonies?

All of them. Read how legal and symbolic ceremonies work in Spain.
