Whitewashed fincas, pine-covered hills and sunsets over the sea: how to plan an Ibiza wedding that runs smoothly, and what to check before you book the villa.

An Ibiza wedding has very little to do with the island of the nightclubs. It is whitewashed fincas hidden among olive and carob trees, small white churches, pine forests running down to turquoise coves and sunsets that turn the whole west coast gold. It suits couples who want a relaxed but elegant celebration by the Mediterranean, with guests arriving for a long weekend. This is what we have learned photographing weddings on the island.

Why an Ibiza wedding

Ibiza is small (about 45 km from end to end), so venues, hotels and beaches are rarely more than half an hour apart. In season there are direct flights from most European cities, and easy connections through Barcelona and Madrid for guests flying from the US or the UK. The island's style suits destination weddings: white walls, linen, olive trees and white flowers look natural here, and the same setting can carry a black-tie dinner just as well.

Where to celebrate on the island

Private fincas and villas. The classic Ibiza wedding venue: a whitewashed country house with terraces, a pool and a garden of olive and palm trees, often with rooms for the couple and close family.

Agroturismos and boutique hotels. Rural estates and small hotels in the countryside around Santa Gertrudis, Sant Miquel or Sant Josep combine rooms for guests, a kitchen and a licence for events. For many couples it's the simplest option.

Village churches. The island's fortified white churches, such as Sant Jordi, Sant Josep or Sant Miquel de Balansat, make a beautiful setting for a religious ceremony.

Beach clubs and cliff-top restaurants. Ideal for a welcome party or a sunset dinner, especially on the west coast.

The villa question: licences and music

Check this before you sign anything. Not every villa in Ibiza can legally host a wedding: the island controls events in private homes and outdoor amplified music, and the fines can be serious. Ask the venue for its event licence, its maximum number of guests and the time the music has to stop or move indoors. A licensed finca or hotel is usually much simpler than a private holiday rental, and a good local planner will know which venues are properly set up for weddings.

When to get married in Ibiza

May, June, September and early October are the best months for an Ibiza wedding: warm days, a warm sea and softer prices. July and August are the busiest and most expensive time on the island: very hot, with traffic, full hotels and venues booked more than a year ahead. From late October many restaurants and beach clubs close for the winter, which can make planning a welcome party harder.

Light and portraits

The best light on the island comes in the last hour before sunset, and the west coast, from Cala Comte to the bay of Sant Antoni, faces straight into it. In summer we suggest a ceremony at around six or seven in the evening, so that the cocktail hour and portraits fall in that golden hour. In the harsh midday sun we look for shade under the arches and olive trees or work with editorial flash; you can read more about editorial flash and natural light. Dalt Vila, the walled old town of Ibiza, and the salt flats of Ses Salines at dusk are beautiful for a session on the day before or after the wedding.

Legal or symbolic?

A civil wedding in Spain is difficult for couples who do not live here, so most international couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Ibiza. On the day it looks and feels exactly the same. A Catholic church wedding is possible, but the paperwork starts in your home parish months in advance. Planning the wedding weekend

An Ibiza wedding is rarely a single day. A typical weekend starts with welcome drinks at a beach club on Friday, the wedding on Saturday and a long lunch or a boat day towards Es Vedrà or Formentera on Sunday. Taxis are scarce in high season, so book shuttles for guests between hotels and the venue, and keep the timeline relaxed, because on the island everything happens a little later.
