A Paris wedding often happens in two places at once: the city itself, for portraits along the Seine while the streets are still empty, and a château or country estate outside Paris, where the whole family can stay for the weekend. Few destinations combine that much romance with that much elegance. This guide covers both — what we have learned photographing weddings in France, from the light to the paperwork.

Why a Paris wedding

Paris is the most photographed city in the world for a reason: limestone façades, bridges over the river, gardens laid out like a stage set and a soft, grey-gold light that flatters everyone. It is also one of the easiest cities to reach — two international airports, Charles de Gaulle and Orly, and high-speed trains from London, Brussels and the rest of France. For international couples, a Paris wedding feels both iconic and timeless.

City or château?

In the city. Hôtels particuliers, private salons, rooftop terraces and grand hotels work beautifully for intimate weddings and elegant dinners — but space is limited and dancing late at night is not always possible.

Châteaux and estates near Paris. Within an hour or so of the city, in the Île-de-France countryside, you find châteaux, stone farmhouses and walled gardens with rooms for guests, space for a long dinner outdoors and a party that can go on late. Further out, Normandy, Champagne and the Loire Valley are around two hours away. Many couples combine both: portraits in Paris, celebration in the countryside. Thusy and Jérôme did exactly that at their Château de Bonaventure wedding.

Portraits in Paris: go early

The secret of a beautiful Paris wedding session is the hour. At sunrise the Trocadéro, the Pont Alexandre III, the Palais-Royal and the Tuileries are almost empty and the light is soft and pink; by mid-morning they are full of visitors. We usually plan a session the morning after the wedding or on the day before, with a car waiting between locations. Some monuments and private courtyards have rules for professional photography, so we check permissions in advance. In the evening, the Seine and the bridges are lovely in the blue hour after sunset.

When to get married in Paris

May, June and September are the best months for a Paris wedding: mild temperatures, gardens in bloom and very long evenings — in June it stays light until almost ten at night. July is warm and busy; in August many Parisians leave the city and some restaurants and suppliers close. The weather can change quickly at any time of year, so every outdoor plan needs a covered alternative, and a beautiful umbrella is always worth packing.

Legal or symbolic?

To marry legally in France, at least one of you must have lived in the town where you marry for at least a month before the wedding, and the civil ceremony at the town hall must come before any religious one. For most international couples that is not practical, so they marry legally at home and hold a symbolic or religious blessing in France. On the day, nobody can tell the difference.

Planning the wedding weekend

A typical weekend starts with welcome drinks or a dinner in Paris, continues with the wedding at a château in the countryside and ends with a relaxed brunch on Sunday. Organise coaches for guests between Paris and the venue — country roads and late nights make it the safest option — and leave time for portraits in the golden hour before dinner. Our guide to planning a wedding-day timeline for the best photos explains how to build the day around the light.
