When your guests fly eight or ten hours to be with you, a single day feels too short, which is why a Barcelona wedding weekend works so well. Almost every international couple we photograph turns their Barcelona wedding into a long weekend: something relaxed on Friday, the wedding on Saturday, and a slow Sunday by the sea. This is the format that works best, and where photographs fit into each day. As a Barcelona wedding photographer team, we have photographed this format many times.

Thursday: arrivals

Most guests land on Thursday. Put them in two or three hotels close together (the Eixample, the Gothic Quarter or the Born) and leave a welcome bag with a map, the weekend schedule and something local: turrón, a bottle of cava, a fan for the heat. No formal plans tonight; people are tired and want to wander.

Friday: city morning, welcome evening

Friday morning is ideal for a couple session in the city before the streets fill up: the Gothic Quarter at 8 a.m., the Born, Park Güell or the seafront. An hour is enough, and it gives you a completely different set of images from the wedding day: urban, editorial and relaxed.

In the evening, the welcome dinner or drinks: a rooftop, a private room in a restaurant, or a tapas crawl for younger groups. Keep it informal and finish early, because Saturday is a long night. If you add photography, two hours of documentary coverage captures the families meeting and the toasts without anyone posing.

Saturday: the wedding

A Spanish wedding starts late and ends later. A typical timeline at a castle or masía outside the city:

• 14:30 · getting ready at the hotel or venue; details and portraits of the dress.
• 16:30 · guests board the shuttles in the city.
• 17:00 · first look and a few portraits before the ceremony.
• 18:00 · ceremony.
• 18:45 · cocktail; family photos; couple portraits at golden hour.
• 21:00 · dinner and speeches.
• 23:30 · first dance and party; shuttles back at 1:00 and 3:00.

Sunday: beach recovery

Nobody wants a formal brunch at 10 a.m. after dancing until three. Book a beach club in Sitges or Castelldefels, or a long paella lunch in Barceloneta from 14:00, and let people drift in. It's also a good moment for a short day-after session: the dress in the sea, the Costa Brava cliffs, or simply the two of you walking along an empty beach at sunset.
